“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.  For He has looked upon
His handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on
will all ages call me blessed.”
(Luke 1:46-48)

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” (Mt 5:8)

Through the Breastplate of Righteousness (see Eph 6:14), the Holy Spirit teaches us to use and to draw upon the gift of Fear of the Lord. This is a beautiful gift. It enables us to have a deep hatred of sin.

There is a little song which speaks of putting on the armor. Sometimes I wish that this was all there is to it – saying the little prayer and singing the little song. But the truth is, it is God’s armor and He has to clothe us in it. He does this by using His gifts, but leaving us free at all times to choose to use the gifts that He is offering to us. He gives us this gift of Fear of the Lord – this gift of hatred of sin – so that we can be clothed in the Breastplate of Righteousness.

Some translations of the Bible call it the Breastplate of Justice. That is another beautiful description. I think the word “justice” has an even deeper connotation because the justice of God has to do with the crucifixion. It has to do very much with redemptive suffering, with the ministry of Jesus, the Mediator, the High Priest, the cleansing in the Blood of the Lamb. That is the justice of God. In fact, there is a beautiful Scripture in Isaiah 42:6 in which we read, “I have called you for the victory of justice.” He is calling us to the Cross now to tread that wine press so that we can continue this redemptive mission in, with and through Jesus, producing the New Wine and taking part in the tremendous cleansing in the Blood of the Lamb.

“For you have been purchased at a great price. Therefore, glorify God in your body” (1 Cor 6:20). Isn’t that beautiful? That is what it means to have on the Breastplate of Righteousness. We glorify God and bear Him in our bodies. We learn a lot about it from Our Lady. She has a sinless Heart. She had the Breastplate on Herself, didn’t She? Her Heart was pure. It was sinless.

“He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and His Mother kept all these things in Her Heart.” (Lk 2:51)
