“Stand fast, with … righteousness as your breastplate.” (Eph 6:14)

The breastplate covers an extremely important area: the heart. If an arrow shoots through the breastplate into the heart, that could be it. The breastplate of righteousness coincides with, “Blessed are the single-hearted for they shall see God” (Mt 5:8). Those with a pure heart shall see God! We need this union with God.

A child is our model of sanctity. “Unless you change and become a little child, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven” (Mk 10:15; Lk 18:17).

The Lord is after the pure of heart. He wants our hearts to be pure, to be full of love, to be full of His love. This can be painful and crucifying at times because it means something has to die. Something has to go so that Someone greater can live in its place. St. John the Baptist knew this and said, “He must increase, while I must decrease” (Jn 3:30). One translation that I love says, “He must increase and I must disappear.” We must lose ourselves and disappear into Jesus. We must take on His mind and His heart and become one with Him.

In the Christmas liturgy we pray, “O wondrous exchange.” This is it: Divinity takes on our humanity, and our humanity is exchanged for His Divinity. It is a beautiful exchange of His love for our sinfulness. Whenever we discuss anything about the heart, it always has to do with love; they are one and the same. Those who love much will have a pure heart.

So don’t hide from the Lord. Whatever you do, don’t hide from the Lord. Always go back to Genesis 3 to see the personality of satan and his tactics. Adam and Eve hid. They hid, and our all-knowing, all-loving God said, “Where are you?” (Gen 3:9) We have to remember that if we keep hiding, we’re not going to know ourselves or who we are. So never hide from the Lord. We have many mechanisms for running and for hiding: busyness, talking on the phone a lot, watching TV, reading good books, whatever; anything to avoid prayer, anything to avoid that face to face dialogue meeting with the Lord. So we must be careful that we’re not running or hiding from the Lord.

God works slowly, always respecting the dignity of the person. He loves us. He desires that we remain pure in Him. He wants us to take precious care of our heart. He wants us to belong only to Him. This is our area of greatest protection: our unity with the Father. “Come now, let us set things right, says the Lord” (Is 1:18) so that we may “Stand fast, with …righteousness as your breastplate” (Eph 6:14) for His greater honor and glory and the salvation of souls!

“Draw your strength from the Lord and from His mighty power.”    (Eph 6:10)
