Excerpt from Healing Power of Obedience by our Mother Foundress

“Whoever loves Me will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.” (Jn 14:23)

Jesus Himself taught us the importance of obedience. One of the greatest teachings Jesus ever gave us was not so much what He said but what He did. Of the thirty-three years that Jesus lived, He spent only three years teaching, preaching, healing, and delivering. Look what He is saying to us in those other thirty years. This is Wisdom Incarnate. Nobody knew He was there except Mary and Joseph. He lived all those years in this tiny little village. Disguised. Nobody knew. Scripture says, “He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them” (Lk 2:51). Out of this obedience, out of this submission to human authority, He grew. In His humanity, He grew in wisdom and grace before God and man.

So out of our obedience, day after day after day, we, too will grow in wisdom and grace before God and man. When we say “growing in grace” we simply mean growing in God’s light. Jesus also learned obedience through suffering. That’s a very important Scripture because it does entail suffering. It entails the Cross simply because we came into the world in a rather rebellious spiritual form. We want our own way. We want things our way and in our time, and to constantly say “yes” to the Lord which means we are saying “no” to ourselves. When God says, “I want you to be full of love,” this is what it is to become a saint. The little catch-22 is that it means to be full of God’s love – the self-love has to go. The self-love goes away a little bit more with every “yes” to God, which is the “no” to myself.

John the Baptist understood this principle perfectly. When he said, “He must increase; I must decrease.” (Jn 3:30). It’s just that simple. The Lord told me that one time years ago in the cloister, when I was struggling with His will and my will. I don’t remember what the struggle was over now, but He spoke to me that day and said, “One of us must go, and it’s not going to be Me.” He wants us to decrease and say “yes” so He can grow within us. This is what gives the Father greater honor and glory.

“He must increase; I must decrease.” (Jn 3:30)
