“Put on the armor of Light” (Rom 13:12)
I always think of Our Lady as having that armor on, when we read about Her in the Book of Revelation as “The Woman clothed with the sun” (Rev 12:1). She is wrapped in Light. The part of the armor is the shield of faith (Eph 6:16). Faith is a gift of Light. It is a very precious gift. It is also a gift of Life, because when we have Light, then we can choose Life.
We also see Our Lady as the “Woman of Faith,” praised by Elizabeth but not because of the pregnancy. This is interesting. “Blessed are you, Mary, because you believed” (Lk 1:45). There is the power of the gift of faith. It is a most powerful gift. Our Lady, this Woman of great faith, is our role model.
There must be action with faith. Just to know a truth isn’t enough; it has to have an action to it. This is an important part of the Holy Spirit’s action within us. Faith without works is dead (Jas 2:26). There is no faith at all. It is a matter of believing God when He tells us something, when He speaks. His Word, the Bible, is filled with truth, wisdom and knowledge. But, unless this gift of faith is operative within us, we have not really understood or accepted what He is saying.
The Holy Spirit uses the gift of understanding along with the shield of faith to help us.
When we receive this gift and begin to understand what He is talking about, what He meant in different Scripture passages or what He is saying to us right now, then our faith level gets very strong. Then we begin to move. Now we have the light, the truth. Once we believe something, we can stand. We have the strength to be true to ourselves. In Ephesians 6:11, Paul tells us, “Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil!” That’s the kind of faith we’re talking about.
“Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled” (Lk 1:45)
