“Exalted at the right hand of God, He received the Promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father and poured It forth…” (Acts 2:33)

God is Love and the rainbow is a symbol of His Covenant Love for us. His Covenant Promise is contained in the prayer that Jesus taught us, the Our Father. Jesus is the New Covenant, the Word made flesh. Matthew 6:6 says, “When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in private.” In Acts 6:4, we read that when the people came out of the upper room, “they were devoted to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.” God began to show me that the prayer Jesus taught us, the Our Father, accomplished both of these things. It is a prayer that also contains the ministry of the Word, His ministry.

One of the reasons He is ‘our’ Father is because we are part of the Blood Covenant. By virtue of our Baptism, we have been purified by Jesus’ Blood, consecrated by the Spirit to a life of obedience. Saint Peter tells us about this in one of his first homilies as the first Pope. Our union with Jesus is possible only through the Blood Covenant that washed away our sins. It is also mentioned in the Book of Revelation, “Their robes were made white in the Blood of the Lamb” (cf. Rev 7:14). Through the Blood of the Lamb we have been given the tremendous gift of union with the Father. We are able to call Him Father only by the power of the Holy Spirit, because we have been consecrated by the Spirit. Scripture says, “No one can cry out ‘Abba, Father!’ except in the power of the Holy Spirit” (cf. Rom 8:15).

Paul said, “If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation” (cf. 2 Cor 5:17). Paul understood that we are all born anew in Christ. When we call God our Father, we acknowledge our birth into the family of God, the Trinitarian family. Jesus said, “When you pray, go into your inner room” (Mt 6:6). That inner room is the enclosed garden within where we go to find intimacy with God. We are to seek out a place of solitude, where no one can find us, so that we may have some alone time with the Father in our inner room, shutting out everything that might distract us, keeping us from giving the Father our undivided attention. So shut out all the things that you did not do, all the things you still need to do. Shut the door for five minutes, ten, fifteen, or longer. It might take a little discipline, but then again, prayer is discipline.

“So then the Lord Jesus, after He spoke to them, was taken up into Heaven and took His seat at the right hand of God.” (Mk 16:19)
