“Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race.” (Rev 21:3)

John tells us in Scripture, “I saw another mighty angel come down from Heaven wrapped in a cloud” (Rev 10:1).  He saw an angel wrapped in a cloud.  A cloud is what led Moses and the people of Israel as they moved by day. That is the Presence of God.  They were led by that cloud.  And here, in the Book of Revelation, John tells us that he saw an angel wrapped, literally wrapped, in the Presence of God.  This angel has a rainbow about his head – a rainbow.  A rainbow is always the sign of covenant, the sign of marriage, the sign of peace, the sign of union.  This is a very special angel who is coming wrapped in the presence of God bearing the symbol of the Covenant of God around his head.  His face shown like the sun, and his legs like pillars of fire.  These pillars of fire, this zeal, is so important to contemplatives.  Contemplative spirituality rests upon four basic pillars – prayer, penance, silence and solitude.

Now, in this angel’s hand, John tells us, he held a little scroll which had been opened (Rev 10:2).  That little scroll which had been opened –God’s Word—is there.  God’s Word comes in little ways.  But God came to us little, didn’t He?  When God came in the Second Person of the Trinity, when the Word became Flesh in the womb of Our Lady, He was very little.  Nine months later, He was still little.  God’s Word comes little.  It is in its littleness that you can usually trust it is truly God’s Word.  God comes hidden.  He comes silently.  He comes in little tiny doses, so to speak, so that we will not be frightened, because He knows we are just little ones.  This is a safeguard for all of us against pride.  He comes to us wrapped in this beautiful gift of humility.

“Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have Life.  I will renew with you the everlasting Covenant” (Is 55:3)
