In Luke 24:49 Jesus Himself gives us this Word: “I am sending the Promise of My Father upon you.”  Isn’t that beautiful?  This is a promise about a Promise.  Jesus is promising to send us something the Father has promised us as well.  In Acts 1:4 we hear, “Wait for the Promise of the Father.”  You can trust the Father when He says, “I promise you.  I give you My Word.”  That is exactly what Jesus means.  It took me awhile to really know and understand that, because we are so used to people who change.  We all change; it is part of our growth process.  But God is constant; He is trustworthy yesterday, today and forever.

Jesus is telling us that this Third Person of the Trinity is the Promise of the Father.  John tells us also that Jesus could not yet give this promise, the Holy Spirit, because Jesus had not yet died.  It is a great mystery that is going on here in the Third Person of the Trinity.  We must look at this more closely.  We must ask, “Who is this Promise?”  This is not just a pledge.  This is a Person who is being called “The Promise” –the Third Person of the Trinity.  He is the Lord and Giver of Life.  We know that for sure.  We profess this in the Creed every Sunday.  “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life.”  What a gift!  What a gift!  When He comes, He gives Life.  Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (Jn 14:6).  This is precisely what the Holy Spirit gave when He overshadowed Our Lady.  He gave Life!

He is the Lord and Giver of Life.  He is holy.  His name is “Holy.”  In the Magnificat Our Lady confirms this.  “Holy is His Name” (Lk 1:49)!

“Wait for ‘the Promise of the Father about which you have heard Me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’" (Acts 1:4-5)
