“As the Father loves Me, so I also love you. Remain in my love.” (Jn 15:9)

Jesus, Who is perfect Love, casts out all fear (cf. 1 Jn 4:18). Love is our weapon, and it has power. Satan does not have this weapon, because satan is fear. Fear is his only weapon, and he uses it a lot. God uses love. The Holy Spirit is a great Gift of God, because He clothes us in Power, wrapping us in love. After He has wrapped us in love, He gives us away. Perhaps you were not expecting to hear that.

Paul said, “The life I live now is not my own” (Gal 2:20). You might be a little bit afraid to give yourself to the Holy Spirit, because He will give you away. It is what the new commandment is all about. “Love one another,” Jesus says, “as I have loved you” (cf. Jn 13:34). Jesus loved us fully in the Spirit. The Spirit gave Jesus away on the Cross. The Spirit will give Jesus away in each one of us every moment, everyday, if we let Him. Even so, we will never be empty, because He will keep refilling us with His love. He never runs out of love.

Look at Corinthians 13 and find out all those things that describe what Love is. It can serve as a wonderful examination of conscience. Am I always kind? Am I always patient? I need more love, more of You, Lord. We actually get to the point where we need God to do all the loving. We get out of His way only when we begin to realize we cannot do it on our own. Jesus knew that. He set up the new commandment so that only He could do it. “Love one another as I have loved you” (Jn 13:34). There is no way to keep that commandment, except to allow Him to keep it Himself, within us. He deliberately made us this way so He would be part of this whole redemption process.

“This is how all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”  (Jn 13:35)
