“But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father Who sees in secret will repay you.” (Mt 6:6)

Solitude is the furnace of transformation. Alone with the Father in prayer, we come into the presence of His beautiful, transforming Fire. In Hosea 2:16 we read, “I will lead her into the desert and there I will speak to her heart.” The Father has many ways of leading us into the desert, that solitary place where He can speak to our hearts. We do a lot of retreat work at Bellwether, and we are amazed at how few people today know the Father. There are so few who hear from Him and experience His love. Yet this is exactly how Jesus taught us to pray. The desert fathers understood the power of this type of prayer. The Father seeks to connect with us this way. He wants to set us on Fire with the Holy Spirit that we may be filled with His zeal and power. It is witnessing at its best, the whole upper room experience.

At Pentecost, when tongues of Fire fell upon the apostles, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to witness to His presence within. Others who saw them knew that God was alive in them. Peter, a mere fisherman, unschooled in theology, was so filled with the Holy Spirit that when he came out of the upper room people were healed when his shadow fell on them!

Francis of Assisi witnessed this way. All he did was walk through a town, and people were converted, even when he did not speak. They experienced the Fire within him, the presence of the Holy Spirit that filled his poverty, his emptiness. God fills the empty with good things (cf. Lk 1:53)! We too can have that same experience in our inner room. Our Lady experienced this Fire, and She said, “My soul magnifies the Lord” (Lk 1:46). She is a spotless mirror of this Holy Spirit Fire (cf. Wis 7:26).

“With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 4:33)
